The outrage by lawmakers over the bonuses paid to AIG executives after the company was bailed out by taxpayer money reminds me of a bit from Saturday Night Live.
During the news segment of SNL, Seth Meyers will make a statement that everyone knows to be the opposite of what he says. He pauses. Then responds...right. Kind of like this, "Nadya Suleman, the octo-mom, had no idea she would have so many babies when she decided to have fertility treatment...right."
I don't know all of the details and conditions the lawmakers who approved the bailout monies to various businesses put on those funds. Did they specify businesses that get the money cannot pay out bonuses, even ones already approved. Did they put restrictions on salaries, travel, the use of corporate jets, hiring, etc. The lawmakers who approved those monies know, or should know the answers to those questions.
So now, when a failed company that had to be bailed out with taxpayer money partly because of bad decisions, decides to hand out bonuses...lawmakers are shocked and outraged that such a thing would happen. Right!
