Holtz Watch 2008

A successful coach seems to be both a blessing and a curse.

This has been such an awesome season for ECU football.  The wins over West Virginia and Virginia Tech at the beginning, and the Conference USA Championship at the end have made this season really fun to follow.

Yet in almost the same breath of reporting the Pirates are going to the Liberty Bowl, we are also talking about the possibility that Skip Holtz will leave ECU for another school.  The main one being talked about is Syracuse in New York.

It's a tough story from a news perspective, because the term that seems most easily applied to the talk that Holtz is leaving is a "rumor."  We're used to reporting facts in the news, not so-called rumors.  However, the talk about Holtz heading to Syracuse is too loud to ignore and would be a disservice to all the interested Pirate fans who watch WITN.  Also, the rumor is backed up by some reported facts, including Lou Holtz saying his son would meet with the athletic director at Syracuse.  Skip Holtz also said Sunday that you "never say never in this business."

So Holtz could be leaving the Pirates.  Therein lies the pain for Pirate fans.  A coach turns a program with a losing record into conference champions, and in doing so, becomes attractive to greener pastures.

What do you think about the Skip situation?

Uhhm Sam what are you talking about Syracuse yes is in new york wheather is cooler there than here, but the facilities are better much better. They have plenty of money and a autamtic bcs bid so if he ever wants to pursue something outside of the liberty bowl than syracuse is a start. How much farther can he take this program really? This is Conference USA not the Big East where a team like South Florida with less fans in there main stadium than ecu's and a program whos only been division 1 for i think 8 years was on the brink of a BCS birth. Come on give me a break. I hope yall plan on finding better reasons than Brrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that Skip is a terrible coach.

It has been final, Skip Holtz made the smart decision and decided to stay in Greenville. Chip and Donna, you are right about ECU needs to raise more and save up more money so they can get Skip Holtz for at least as long as until they are in a BCS conference or otherwise up to at least about 2015 would be good. Robert, I agree with you about choosing to stay in Greenville. Skip made the right decision. Its a whole lot better down here and you do not have to worry about the extreme cold and having a facility that is not pretty at all, one that is shared with several other athletic teams. compare that to ECU's athletic complex. We have much better facilities and even though we get disrespected so much more often than we should, we do get more and should keep having more than Syracuse, for what the two programs have done over about the last decade.

Living in Greenville or living in Syracuse, that is the question. Easy answer for me, Greenville. Although the Orange would be BSC, it is a disaster. For me, looking from the outside-in, it would be the wrong move for him as a coach and his family. That is my non-bias ECU Fan comment. The $$ he's making in Greenville would have to be tripled almost, to compete with NY prices. If I were his dad, friend, or agent, I would say to him to hold off until a good opportuinty presented itself, because going to the Orange wouldn't be worth a boat load of money to me.

I would REALLY hate to see Skip go. He is such an enormous morale-booster for his players, coaches, and the fans. The morale thing, along with Skip's outgoing personality, ability to choose a great coaching staff, high expectations of his players, and knowledge of the game would be enough WITHOUT the "Holtz" name...that has just been a welcomed perk! I agree with Chip's comment...give the man more money. That's what we have to do to keep quality coaches and promote this program to a higher level.
