Hats off to Lindell Kay of the Jacksonville Daily News.
Last month Kay profiled the 36 year old unsolved murder of Marine William Miller in Jacksonville. Today Miller's alleged killer, Belhaven's former police chief George Hayden, is behind bars charged in his murder.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says the articles inspired a key witness to come forward with specific evidence that led to Hayden's arrest.
For many, it's easy to by cynical and critical of journalists with what seems like sensational and over the top reporting at times. What happened in the Miller stories is an example of the good journalism can do and the critical role it can play.
It is important to note though, Hayden is innocent until proven guilty...that part is now for the justice system to decide.
