Former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms died on the Fourth of July, at the age of 86.

He served in the U.S. Congress for 30 years. The fiery Helms was called a "senator whose stature in Congress had few equals."

We hope you'll share your thoughts and memories of Jesse Helms on this blog.

How can any of you defend a person that represented the state of NC with continuous hatred with no regrets because he stood for his unrighteous views and beliefs? As far as defending is government I wonder is that how HE and OTHERS enjoyed their lavished lifestyle and wealth plus receiving all the freebles. Judgement must come to the ones that think they are unstoppable. The coverage of his life and death was little compared to other representatives. I wonder and think it was EMBRASSMENT of his character.

He's dead. Let's move on.

Jesse Helms was a realist who stood his ground. The other "Jesse" is the racist.

Posted by: Anonymous I am sad to see him pass away. What he did for our state can never be done by another human being!!! He was true to himself and true to the world. Although he had his racial opinions every does JUST GLAD HE WAS MAN ENOUGH TO SAY IT IN PUBLIC!! HELMS YOU WILL BE MISSED!!

Glad to see him go. When I heard the news I did a little cheer. His backwards thinking has disgraced North Carolina for decades. I guess some of you don't mind being thought of as backward hicks but I do. Good riddance.

Posted by: Troy Hey Joseph before you start trying to insult people make sure you spell the words right. There is an "e" on the end of hypocritE. There you go buddy.

Posted by: Shawn Joseph maybe you don't like black people, if you agreed with Jesse Helms?

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! I agree Joseph he was.

racist, self-serving, self-righteous, holier than thou, hypocrit

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! sd i like you, i really do because you seem like a genuine nice person. But look at what you just wrote. Its an oxymoron. Why do you call what helm's said....someone who spoke what he felt, and you call what I do and an opinion? I'm speaking what I felt to. I put a link down at my other comment where you could see some of the things he said. But if you like I can go on youtube and find videos of him holding water holes on black people in the 60's, and putting dogs on black people, as they held their children. I can't count the number of times on one video he said the 'n' word. Look at alex, just because I don't like helms means i like homosexual lifestyle. That ignorant. That's like me says, since you liked helms you must hate black people. See I have to love helms to get into heaven, but i don't have to like what he did. But you can't make someone feel something they don't. Everyone will pay for THEIR own sins, even me. But I spoke what i felt, i hope you understand a little better.

Why must you degrade someone who spoke what he felt? You get to put your opininions (no matter what they are) here on this blog, and no one degrades you. Remember what you write, because all of us experience death in our families.

from the hate which has spewed from frank & obama, it seems as if biggotry still exists. I guess they feel that Helms stance on protecting the unborn was wrong, they must also be supporters of the homosexual lifestyle

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! jesse helms is dead. He was a bigot and a racist. I'm kind of sorry he died, I was hoping having the first black president would kill him. ...http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1871 Here is a link where he was himself, or you can look at him on youtube spewing his bigotry. Tomorrow I won't even remember him.

Ain't that a shame...one less bigot in the world. But at least you knew where he stood.

Posted by: Martin I have heard numerous stories of the kind of personal attention you speak of by Sen Helms. He has been villanized for many years. I would like to thank him for having faith in the citizens of NC. He knew that we didn't need BIG government. We had each other. He was a safeguard in government that I don't believe exists today. Thank you Jesse.

I may not have agreed with everything Mr. Helms had to say, but I do know that he helped my father get his disability after he had a massive stroke. This country has lost a man that would stand for his beliefs, even when they were not popular.

Senator "No" certainly polarized our state. I won't say anything more as I was taught to respect the dead.
