Our Obligation As Journalists

Ever since we reported crime was up eight-percent in Greenville last year, the second highest increase in the state, there has been a flood of reaction and controversy.

Ever since we reported crime was up eight-percent in Greenville last year, the second highest increase in the state, there has been a flood of reaction and controversy.

Viewers of WITN have posted hundreds of comments about crime stats, Chief William Anderson and crime overall in Greenville. Others have started and online petition for an investigation of the department. That also has hundreds of signatures, some anonymous.

As journalists, when so many accusations are made and so many people speaking out, we have an obligation not to turn the other way and ignore what is going on. We have an obligation to seek the truth, whatever it may be.

I have been investigating many of the claims that have been made at witn.com and the online petition. We'll begin sharing the results of what I found Thursday on WITN News at Six.

Yet again, you have offered nothing other than accusations. If you have something show it too me, give me the link etc. Talking tough and typing in all caps isn't enough proof for me.

Oh please TED! You were given the web addresses and links on the very first blog that went out. For Heaven's sake HOW MUCH MORE PROOF do you need! WITN printed it out and highlighted it and then put the tough questions to the chief. All he could do was the "oh my baby, Oh my darling" side step. He had no educational informed answer except "dares a berry simple eceplanation" He couldn't even speak half way educated much less professionally and a back dated sorry memo doesn't cut it for the public. He needs to give a better explanation then that. Not only for our crime rate but the Heck he is putting our men and women in Blue through. No one wants to follow a thug for a leader and that my friend is what you have. No additional proof needed. WITN gave it on Thursday and he hopes it goes away. Please that is not how our citizens are!

Maybe I missed something, but the explanation of why calls are sometimes classified as suspicious activity makes sense to me. I am not willing to blindly join a movement to remove Chief Anderson until someone shows me some hard evidence, not just accusations. I keep hearing references to what happened in FL, well just what the hell did happen there and where can I read about it for myself? Give me the web address, not just a year and a city. I've asked for someone to show me any evidence that the 8% spike in Greenville's crime rate was the fault of Chief Anderson's policies, but so far there has only been accusations, not proof. If there is any evidence to be presented, or if there were problems in FL then WITN has an obligation to uncover that and present it too us. If not shame on WITN for not only allowing but also perpetuating what appears to me to be nothing more than a witch hunt.

those trying to protect the police chief are those who are willing to sacrifice their kids & safety in order to have a person like themselves in office. there is no need to even speak logically with those who still see things through the lens of race. the police chief is unqualified..we all know it

Dave, Check the Daytona Beach News Journal and the DeLand Beacon. 2006 and 2007 were tumultuous years because of Bill Anderson. We couldn't believe the things Bill could say and do without any consequences. He bullied his subordinates and the result was a decrease in arrests. The morale in the Police Department was so bad that 85% of the patrol persons voted in the Teamsters. He is intelligent and well spoken but absolutely closed minded. It is a shame that communities have to experience the likes of Bill.

Thank you Dave for looking into this and for WITN thinking this was news worthy. So many allegations are EXACTLY the same as they were in FL. Believe me sir it is not just a few angry citizens or police officers. The proof is right here, right on our streets. I hope you ask him the toughest questions. WITN is also part of our community. Thank you for keeping our posts and allowing us to speak freely (with some monitoring) about our serious doubts and concerns with this chief. I was so excited to see an African American Chief thought it was exactly what our city needed. I am sooooo disappointed in how he turned out and what he has done to our officers. It is a shame that racism is still in our community and it happens from African Americans just like it does from Caucasions. He has been horable to our men and women in blue and now the citizens have had to pay the price for that. THANK YOU again!

Dave Jordan, I was recently told from a friend who lives in G-ville about an incident that occurred that after the police department was called, they never showed up to investigate the scene. I was wondering if you would ask the chief if this ever happens where they dont respond to domestic calls? I was also told that law enforcement has stopped patroling the streets after a certain time of the evening due to the high volume of crimes. Is that true?
