Dangerous Dog Ordinance

By Dave Jordan

Pitt County Animal Control officials tell me the dangerous dog ordinance that has been on the books for a little over a year has given them the necessary tools to do their jobs and keep citizens safe.

The ordinance allows them to decide whether a dog is dangerous...based on several criteria.  Owners can appeal the decision to a dangerous dog board.  So far this year there have been 30 complaints with nine dogs being declared dangerous.  State lawmakers are now considering similar legislation.

One of the most interisting pieces of information I came across while looking into dangerous dogs is a finding from the Centers for Disease Control.  It says the number one way to prevent dog bites is owner education.

What do you think about dangerous dogs laws?
