Taking Away The Keys

Thanksgiving may be a good time to talk to older loved ones about driving.

My Grandpa Lannon is 96 years old, and we're thankful he's living such a long and wonderful life.  He can't do a lot of things like he used to, however.  A few years ago, he stopped driving.  A concerned citizen saw him run a stop sign and called the police on him.  That citizen noticed how old my grandpa looked and was concerned he was a dangerous driver.  Our family was relieved by this turn of events. It gave his children the perfect way to explain, it's time to give up the car keys and stop driving for good.  In general, it's not so easy for family members to broach that sensitive subject with their older loved ones.  Driving, for many, represents independence.  Thanksgiving, a holiday where hopefully the entire family can be together, may be a good time to bring up this difficult subject.  How would you go about taking an older loved one off the road?
