Tracking Sex Offenders In Eastern Carolina

There are more than 12,000 registered sex offenders in eastern Carolina. Do they live near you?

By Dave Jordan

Do you know if sexual offenders are living in your neighborhood, near schools or daycare facilities?

North Carolina's Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry has around 12,000 convicted sex offenders listed. The intent of the registry is to allow all of us to check and see if sexual offenders might be living near us. The state says the registry was created to "Protect the public, increase awareness, keep the public informed and allow them to take proactive measures to ensure safety in their communities. Use of this information to threaten and intimidate people on the list is subject to criminal prosecution."

The sex offender registry has about 12,000 people on it. I recently did a check and found several dozen people on the list living within several miles of me and my family,  and my kids school.

Have you ever checked out the registry to see who may be living near you? I encourage you to do it to increase your own awareness. You can find a link on our homepage.

You can also leave your comments here about our series on tracking sex offenders and what you think of the state keeping such a registry.

I FEEL YES IT'S A GOOD THING THAT YOU CAN TRACK SEX OFFENDERS BUT WHAT ABOUT MURDERS? CAN WE KEEP TRACK OF THEM AS WELL? ONE IS NO BETTER THAN THE OTHER... HOW ABOUT LETTING US HAVE ACCESS TO A WEB OR MAKE RELEASED MURDERS REGISTER LIKE THE SEX OFFENDERS HAVE TO, THEY ARE BOTH A RISK TO CHILDREN AS WELL AS ADULTS.

I think that if we had a more strict system with harsher punishments perhaps more wouldn't fall to make poor decisions then we wouldn't need to keep track of where they were. I think that we should bring back tar and feathering for example. I believe many would rethink their decisions if they knew they could be walking around for a month like that. The slaps on the wrists just arn't doing it. Repeat offenders are greated with open arms by their buddies behind bars. They have become someone respected by the crimes they have comitted. We are obviously doing something wrong.

There is a sex offender living in Morehead City. His address is listed as "Homeless" followed by a license plate number. How can someone, such as this guy, be tracked by a license plate number? I think that's ridiculous!!!!!

Kudos to Len in Beaufort!!! I agree with what he said. I have children and do want to protect them to the fullest. HOWEVER, being convicted and being found guilty ARE 2 different things. I also know someone that has been convicted but we, including the DA's office, can't understand why the judge deemed him a sex offender. Just a week ago there was a drug bust right down the street from us. They were selling and growing it right in the house. I am concerned about that also but there is no way to find out who they are.

I THINK IF THE CRIME WAS A SERIOUS ONE WE SHOULD KEEP TRACK. BUT WHAT ABOUT KEEPING TRACK OF MURDERERS OR PEOPLE WHO ROB AN STEAL YOUR STUFF? MAYBE WE SHOULD KEEP TRACK OF ALL THOSE AS WELL. BEING CONVICTED AND BEING GUILTY ARE REALLY 2 DIFFERENT THINGS. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS A CONVICTED SEXUAL OFFENDER. BUT WHAT HE DID, WAS NO WAY JUSTIFIED BY HIS SENTENCE
