One of the things about working at the Chamber is that we host and attend many events.  We are always trying to come up with new ideas to keep our events fresh (Kevin says there are no sacred cows), but there is something nice about having the tried and true. Last week Trent Cadillac Buick Pontiac GMC, Inc. hosted their now legendary Business After Hours with The Flame providing some of the best comfort food I have had in a long time:  fried chicken, potatoes, green beans, barbecue, and a delicious cobbler for dessert.  This week Port City Java and New Bern Artworks collaborated to host a very well-attended Business Before Hours.  The smell of freshly brewed coffee and the nibbling of coffee cakes while admiring beautiful artwork with good friends and colleagues, made for a warm feeling on a cold and slightly dreary morning.  That’s what I like, familiar and friendly faces and, the coming together of our community that the Chamber provides.

Our next “big” event is Administrative Professionals’ Day on Wednesday, April 21.  I’m really excited about this event for several reasons.  We are hosting a fabulous speaker for the seminar portion.  If you have never attended Debbie Zang’s (Director of Operations with ECIM) seminar “FISH! – Catch the Energy, Release Your Potential!” then here is your chance!  Ever heard of the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, WA?  This session will teach you their philosophy on how to get energized in order to provide excellent customer service.  You will be engaged, inspired, and entertained!  I promise!

During lunch at previous Administrative Professionals’ Day, we have had fashion shows, a health expo, and featured speakers.  This year Teresa Suhrie decided to do something a little different.  We are featuring our first-ever “Woman-less Beauty Pageant,” where we will crown “Miss-ter New Bern Chamber-licious!”  Didn’t Kevin say something about there not being any sacred cows?  Well, guess what, he is the first to be sacrificed!  Also vying for the title are Mayor Bettis, Charles Cushman, Chuck Dale, Jimmie Hicks, Richard Leissner, Ernie Richardson, Dan Robert, and Chat Sittig.  Judging will be based on talent (the ability to walk and chew gum at the same time), a question and answer segment, and best stage name.  I don’t want to start anything, but there has been some “talk” between “Kristi Kreme” and “Tequila Mockingbird.”  Go to our web site at www.newbernchamber.com for more information on attending or sponsoring this event.

I like the fun we have at this Chamber as we journey along life’s road, and that warm familiar feeling when I see old friends. Oh, yeah, and Kevin Roberts in kitten heel pumps.
