2010 is a year of Celebration for New Bern.  In 1710, Baron Christophe de Graffenreid, of Bern Switzerland, founded New Bern.  To honor this milestone, and our rich history of accomplishments, New Bern is hosting hundreds of events planned for our year-long tercentennial celebration.  The events have been organized by a wide variety of groups to celebrate the city's heritage and showcase its many resources.

As the second-oldest city in North Carolina, we lay claim to many historic firsts.  The state’s first permanent capital was located here under the royal governor, William Tryon.  The first state printing press was set up and the first book and newspaper were published in New Bern.  The first state public school was opened here.  In the 1890s, New Bern pharmacist C.D. Bradham invented Brad’s Drink, now known worldwide as Pepsi-Cola.

Did you know that:  In 2005, the city was ranked fifth on the list of Top Small Retirement Towns in the Carolinas by Retirement Lifestyles. New Bern was also featured as a notable retirement haven on “The Travel Show” segment of NBC’s “Today Show.”  In 2008, New Bern was voted one of the top ten places to visit during Christmas by Time Magazine and Best Places to Retire by Where to Retire Magazine.

For those of us who call New Bern home, we have much to celebrate in 2010!
