New Year’s Eve is a great time of reflection and a great time to look forward to all a new year will hold. This morning, we issued the “2013 Ten Word Challenge,” asking people to summarize their 2013 in ten words, or less.
My words were easy to think of: Sweet Baby Kate, Big Sister Lauren, WITN News at Noon.
Sweet Baby Kate
I am in absolute shock that my Sweet Baby Kate will be turning one in less than two months. Our family welcomed Kate in February, and within minutes of her birth, my mom declared her “so sweet.” Indeed, Kate continues to have a certain sweetness about her. My Katherine is quick to smile and laugh, easy to crime at the unexpected boo boo or food delay, but surprisingly resilient when playing with her big sister. Kate had some ups and downs this first year. She had reflux for the first several months, and she would throw up about once a day. She was also hospitalized for one night with RSV while we were visiting my family in Chicago when she was just eight weeks old. That night in the hospital might have been the longest of my life. She also had to get tubes to fend off chronic ear infections, but those have been a blessing. Even as I write this, I am keenly aware that Kate’s life has been a walk in the park compared to some children. Though she had some minor health issues, she is abundantly healthy.
Kate is a babbling machine who has been “cruising” for a couple months (walking while holding onto furniture and other objects) and her latest trick is crawling up the stairs. We have much to celebrate when it comes to Kate in 2013 and much to look forward to next year.
Big Sister Lauren
2013 was a huge adjustment for Lauren. She was a couple months shy of turning three when her new sister arrived, and she welcomed her new role with open arms. Lauren continued to amaze us in 2013 with her incredible vocabulary and ability to communicate her thoughts. Her love for Disney princesses blossomed, along with her growing collection of princess dresses. She loves to sing and will often request her two current favorite songs: Dancing Queen by ABBA and Roar by Katy Perry. Lauren is a master negotiator and gave Chris and me some rough moments behavior-wise in 2013 (think terrible twos). However, as the year draws to a close, she seems to be loosening her grip on the power struggle with us. It’s wonderful to have my sweet Lauren acting more like my sweet Lauren.
WITN News at Noon
Over the summer, I changed my schedule to include WITN News at Noon in addition to WITN News at Sunrise. To the casual observer, this might look like a bad idea. However, it actually allows more time with girls, giving me a chance to see them before they head to daycare for the day while still allowing me to spend most of each afternoon with them. I’m blessed to have a fellow working mom for a boss who totally gets it.
The other upside of working on “the noon” is getting to interact with an entirely different set of coworkers in addition to the Sunrise crew. I love being part of the daytime news process and news team. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve grown a lot. I have lot more learning and growing to do, and I’m grateful for that.
Here’s to 2013….and to all the blessings to be had and celebrated in 2014!
