The Big Sister’s Real Gift

Lauren gave Baby Kate a lovie, but her true gift is that of parental confidence.

Several people recommended that Lauren give her new baby sister a gift at the hospital to welcome her into the world.  We selected an adorable lovie with Kate’s name monogrammed on it for Lauren to present to Kate.  In return, Kate “gave” Lauren a new toy (the hair dresser apron and tools from Melissa & Doug...something sisterly!).

These physical gifts are great, but I quickly came to the realization that Lauren’s real gift to Baby Kate was actually that of parental confidence.

My husband, Chris, and I both agree we feel much more relaxed with Kate as a newborn than we did with Lauren.  I honestly felt more “prepared” for Lauren, because I spent my pregnancy learning about caring for an infant, how to feed them, how to help them sleep, and so on.  I was worried in the final months of this pregnancy that I had not done enough “studying” this time around, and I would be unprepared.

Caring for a newborn is not like riding a bike; it’s even better.

Another gift of Lauren to Kate is that we now fully understand how quickly children grow.  Everyone tells you, “they grow up so fast!”  You believe them without fully understanding what they mean.  Now, I know.  I look at Kate, so tiny in her daddy’s arms, making all those sweet, sometimes funny, facial expressions that babies make when they sleep.  Then I peek in on my sleeping toddler and can’t believe how much she’s grown.  Now I understand, Kate will do the same.

When I think about it, that’s more of a gift from Lauren to my husband and me: the knowledge that this tiny little baby will quickly grow into a tiny little person.  She’s so far a sweetheart, and I can’t wait to see who this little Baby Kate of mine will become.
