She USED To Eat Her Vegetables, Part Two

An old trick provided a breakthrough with my toddler's recent protest of vegetables.

I received a lot of comforting words following the last blog entry about Lauren's protest of vegetables recently, despite her previous love of them!  Most people contend that she's in a phase, and she'll grow out of it. 

As I continued to watch Lauren ignore veggies and start to shun some fruits she had liked in the past, I noticed the moment of refusal often came when she put her fingers in the bowl, not when she put the food in her mouth.  My husband and I concluded that Lauren's biggest issue was texture.  Then Chris had a brilliant idea: dust.

"Dust" is the word we use for finely ground oatmeal.  One of the baby food books we have (Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron) recommended running oatmeal through the food processor to create this "dust" to sprinkle over baby's first finger foods to help them get a better grip.  So, you dice up some melon, and for clumsy little baby fingers, you sprinkle on the dust to add some traction, if you will.  I would actually pour the dust on, put a lid on the bowl, shake it pretty good to fully coat, and then give the bowl to Lauren.  It worked like a charm!

So Sunday, as were serving Lauren her pasta with tiny bits of broccoli and flax seed in the sauce, I also cooked up some peas, what used to be her favorite veggie.  I coated them with dust, and.....she ate every single one.  In fact, the texture of the tortelline was freaking her out, so the "snow peas" as we dubbed the dust-covered veggies, went in a flash. 

Since Lauren got really good at finger food, the "dust" went back into the cabinet.  But after last night's dinner, the tupperware holding the dust will be a mainstay once again on the countertop.

    Agreed about the pictures, they're all brilliant. Somebody in the part 1 comments suggested that she is choosing. Offer a choice between two vegetables. Also, this might just be my adult tastes talking, but some vegetables are much better than others. Chopped zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, and eggplant sauteed in olive oil and then tossed with a plain pasta sauce is delicious and healthy. (Of course, we saute them in garlic, but garlic and kids don't always mix well. Maybe a light dash of Italian seasoning but then again, the pasta sauce will probably contain that.) Oh and it's messy. Kids love messy. Going another direction, some veggies are fun to eat, like asparagus, or artichokes. 15 months is too young for artichokes, obviously, but still good to know. Lastly, I'll put green vegetables (peas, green beans) in a casserole rather than serve them on the side. Nobody really likes them (that I know) but in a casserole? Works wonders.
