We have slowly been expanding Lauren's food selections over the past few months. So far, she's only given the thumbs down to pureed plums and peas. In chatting about this with another mom from Lauren's day care class, she recommended two things. First, she mixes peas with a sweet fruit to make the taste more tolerable for her baby boy. Also, she buys packaged baby food to see if her son likes the flavor of the fruit or vegetable before she commits to making an entire batch.
I've been surprised at how fun and fulfilling it has been to make Lauren's food from scratch. Nearly everything she eats is pureed, so we pour it into ice cube trays after it gets a few whirs around in the blender, freeze the food, then pop the cubes into labeled bags in the freezer. When it's time to eat, we get out the cubes we need, heat them a touch in the microwave, and it's time to eat!
There are tons of resources on how to make baby food. We use two different books in our house. One is Baby Love, by Norah O'Donnell (NBC News correspondent) and her chef husband, along with Super Baby Food. Baby Love has tons of simple and creative recipes. I made the first recipe on the list, Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal Raisin, just yesterday. Lauren absolutely loved it! Lots of "mmmm's!"
Super Baby Food is a pretty comprehensive book with lots of ideas. It's almost like a reference book with a ton of information. I'm glad I have it around for quick answers.
