I Don't Run My Dishwasher; It Runs Me

What are the little things you do to simplify keeping a happy and clean home?

This blog is less about the baby and more about the mommy.

I came to a startling realization lately: I don't run my dishwasher.  It runs me.  Or more accurately, it runs my kitchen.  It finally occurred to me that the one thing I needed to do in order to go to sleep with a clean kitchen each night was to make sure dinner started with enough room in the dishwasher for whatever dishes we were about to use. I realize that I probably sound like a lunatic, but seriously, this little change has made my life so much easier.
Frankly, by the time we're done eating dinner, I'm exhausted.  I'm sure many of you can relate.  The last thing you (or at least I) want to do is clean up a kitchen that's going to take more than just a few minutes.  The key, for me, to success starts several hours before dinner, before I leave for work.  I look inside my dishwasher and decide, does it have enough room for everything else we're going to use today?  If it does, I walk away.  If it's full or pretty close to being full, in goes the detergent, on goes the dishwasher, and off I go to work.  The only thing I have left to do is unload it, sometime before we sit down for dinner.  Clean up after that is a breeze, and I can spend a little time with my husband before calling it a day.
Again, the fact that my dishwasher runs my kitchen cleanliness might make me a little crazy, but it definitely makes me happy.
Now, if I can only figure out how to get the laundry to put itself away.
What things do you do to help keep your house under control?

If that's how you run your kitchen, and it makes you crazy, I'm crazy too because I do EXACTLY the same thing, and I don't have kids. I have the solution for the laundry too..dry cleaners. It comes home ready to go in the closet. the rest of the stuff is easy. I can spend time with my wife and money on the laundry, or neither. I choose to spend time with my wife.
