Beware The Cords

A recall has been issued of a popular video baby monitor.

My husband and I love the video monitor we use in Lauren's room.  It was so helpful to see in the early months when she did not sleep through the night (ahhh, memories) if she had lost her pacifier or if something else was irking her.  Now, it's helpful to see if she's sitting up or standing up, ready to leave the crib after a nap or in the morning.  Lauren's monitor is the reason why her crib is pulled a few feet away from the wall.  Since you want the camera to be able to see in the crib, it generally means it must be near the crib.  With the camera, comes the cord.  Therein lies danger.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of the Summer Infant Company's video monitors after two babies tragically died.  According to the Commission, a ten-month old girl was strangled to death in March 2010 after the camera was placed on the crib rail.  That puts the cord easily in the reach of the baby.  In November 2010, a six-month old boy from Conway, South Carolina.  The camera was attached to a changing table that was attached to the crib.

The CPSC recommends putting any cords at least three feet away from a child's crib.

Lauren's camera is mounted high on the wall, pointing down into crib, though she could still reach the cord if the crib were against that wall.  So until we stop using the monitor, her crib will sit away from the wall.

Its unfortunately when any child dies, but it seems like almost any baby monitor could pose this same danger. I'm considering buying this wireless monitor, i'm hoping it will be a bit safer since it doesn't have any cords.
