NBC executives and affiliate stations have been bombarded by "cut & paste" e-mails urging us to cancel "The Playboy Club". The cut & paste crowd got their wish, not because of the e-mail barrage but because the ratings stunk. However, somebody isn't paying attention because we're still getting the e-mails.
Ironically, we're now getting complaints from fans of the show who believe the network caved to the pressure. Bottom line is that if the ratings aren't there, the program will be cancelled and something new will take its place. In this case, it will be Brian Williams' new prime time news special. I have high hopes for its success and I'm sure it will last more than three episodes.
Here's a copy of the e-mail I received last night about a program that was cancelled a week ago.
Dear NBC Network Affiliate,
Sexual exploitation is to be condemned, not programmed on network TV.
On behalf of my family and friends, and as viewer of NBC Universal, I am asking you to halt production of the upcoming series, “The Playboy Club.”
Idolizing hardcore porn king Hugh Hefner might be a suitable topic for a porn movie but I will keep that kind of trash out of my home.
Studies demonstrate that pornography leads to violence against women, sexual trafficking, addiction, destruction of families, and so much more harm. This is documented on PornHarms.com. Why would NBC promote such a destructive force?
This series is an affront to every female in America! One of NBC’s affiliates in Utah has already announced that it will not be airing the show due to viewer complaints.
We appeal to our local NBC affiliate, NBC's executive leadership, and the Comcast Board of Directors & Audit Committee Chairman, as many of you have families and children yourselves. Would you want your young son or daughter, watching a TV show, idolizing Hugh Hefner with his sleazy attitude toward women? The Playboy philosophy toward women is, “use them, abuse them, and discard them,” just like Hefner has with his girlfriends and wives.
Playboy, once equated with 'soft-core' pornography, has been distributing hardcore pornography on pay TV channels and the Internet for years. Distribution of hardcore pornography can be prosecuted under federal (Title 18 of the U.S. Code, Ch. 71, starting with section 1460) and state obscenity laws. The U.S. Department of Justice should have halted any distribution of Hefner's materials, but they have turned a blind eye to his illegal activities.
I appeal to all parents in NBC leadership. How can you, as a parent support programming that does nothing more than objectify and sexually exploit women. Is that appropriate treatment of your children? Would you want your sons to imitate Hefner and his lifestyle?
I urge you to do the right thing for your children, my family, and for society.
