Obama TV

Barack Obama will be airing a half hour political commercial Wednesday Night on NBC, CBS and Fox. Learn more and share your thoughts.

I keep hearing it.  “I can’t wait ‘til the election’s over.  I’m so sick of those political ads”  Or perhaps it’s some variation of that statement such as “I love the Fibber Kay ads but I don’t ever wanna see those old farts in their rocking chairs again”.  Or vice versa.   After all, North Carolina is a battleground state and we have some very close races going on.  However, it appears none is closer than the Obama/McCain battle.  The battleground is changing from thirty second commercials to a thirty minute program.

Senator Obama is pulling out the big guns Wednesday night, preempting Knight Rider on NBC and The New Adventures of Old Christine on CBS.  FOX is also airing the half hour special and will follow it with a continuation of World Series Game Five.  If it hadn’t rained so hard in Philly earlier this week, his half hour could have been responsible for delaying the start of World Series Game Six.

So what reason would a network have to preempt regular programming?  It appears each of the three networks has at least a million reasons to do so. I’ve seen estimates varying from $900,000 up to $2,000,000 per network for the program.  So why isn’t ABC participating?  Simple – Dancing With The Stars is a huge hit and I'm speculating ABC probably would require far more money than the others to displace the show.

There is a precedent to a candidate airing a half hour commercial.  Remember that guy with the pointy ears and the funny voice?  Um, Ross Perot, yeah that’s the guy.  Unlike Perot, Obama is not charging at windmills here as virtually every poll out there shows that he’s in a very good position heading into Tuesday’s election.

If you have a complaint about the show, add a comment to the end of this blog.  If you play by the rules (Don’t call him a Muslim, don’t threaten to assassinate him, stay away from racist comments, etc.) we’ll be happy to post them.  Oh yeah, I’m grateful Fox will be carrying the show so that if anyone wants to complain about the “liberal media” at least Rupert Murdoch’s company is in the mix as well.
