What's New @ witntv.com?

WITN General Manager Chris Mossman discusses changes to witntv.com and AP award for best website.

Frequent visitors to witntv.com have certainly noticed that we’ve streamlined the site by cleaning up the tiles on our home pages and better utilizing “white space” to make the site easier for you to navigate.  I’m going to share some info with you on the changes we’ve made and then wrap the blog up by bragging about an award that we’ve won.

As you’re reading this, you’ve obviously discovered our new blog layout.  I believe this format makes it easier for you to find the blogs we offer because they’re aggregated together on one page.  Now you can find “Just Ask Mike” and our news, sports and weather blogs all together.  We’ve added “Notes From The Newsroom” and “From The Big Chair”.  Notes will enable our News Director, Stephanie Shoop and our Managing Editor, Bill Wilson, an avenue to communicate some of the behind the scenes decision-making involved with the coverage decisions that we make on-air and on-line.  I will address a variety of topics with the Big Chair blog.  Some are topics you may find interesting while others could well bore you to tears.   There IS a reason why I’m a General Manager and not a professional writer.

The final new section is titled “We’ve Got Something To Say”.  It serves as a mouthpiece for all of the WITN staff to post a blog if there is an issue that they want to discuss.  It’s not a free speech zone.  You won’t find out which of our employees plan to vote for Ron Paul and you won’t find any editorial coverage but we’re encouraging our folks to discuss relevant topics for which they have a passion.

We’re in the process of modifying our on-line weather presentation.  We’ve added some features to the weather section and there are more changes on the way.  We have not removed the Live Doppler 7 Image from the top left corner of the home page but we have layered the 7 Day Forecast over the Doppler map.  Why?  People always want to know what our weather will be but the Doppler picture looks pretty bare when it’s not raining here in eastern North Carolina .

Carolina Camera is a great, new way for viewers to share pictures with us here at WITN and we, in turn, post the content for all to see.  We kicked it off with a St. Patrick’s Day contest and there’s more on the way.  Send us anything interesting, from severe weather photos to pet pictures to high school graduation shots.  We’ll post ‘em.

We’ve recently activated Entertainment and Political sections and will be adding much more content to both sections over the coming weeks.

We’re trying something new with Carolina Scanner.  We’re using RSS feeds to aggregate headlines from news websites throughout the state.  Click on the scanner and you’ll see headlines from television stations and newspapers in Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington and Asheville all with one click.  We’ve even included a number of news sources here in the east, including WNCT.com, JDnews.com and the Reflector.com.  If you see a headline that catches your eye, click on it and it will pull up the story on their website in a fresh window.

If you have questions or comments, either send me an e-mail at Chris.Mossman@witntv.com or post a comment to this blog.

And now, here’s the bragging I said we’d get to at the end.  We’re proud that WITN won the Associated Press Award for best website, Division Two.  Our friends at WRAL.Com took the Division One honors so obviously we’re in very good company.  But only a select few vote for the awards and over 250,000 people visit WITNTV.com on a monthly basis.  I'm very excited about all the traffic we get here on-line but that’s the subject for a future Blog From The Big Chair
