Kate is three weeks old now, and we are still very much in the “getting to know you” phase. I have never been an expert at distinguishing what babies want by their cries. I can usually tell hunger, but sometimes I get that confused with being tired. However, I think I’m starting to tell the difference in Kate’s cries. Thank goodness--it’s awful when babies cry, but when you can’t figure out why, it’s like salt in your wounds.
I am fortunate that Kate is a good sleeper. She usually sleeps for three or four hour stretches a few times a day/night. Yesterday, she slept from 5 pm until almost 9 pm. That was super helpful in allowing us to focus on Lauren during dinner, bathtime and bedtime. We’ll see if Kate gives her big sister the same gift of attention today. You just never know at this age! There is no schedule (at least not for us).
The trick for me is following the age-old advice of sleeping when the baby sleeps. I’m not always the best at forcing myself to lay down when there’s always something to be done around the house. I’m an expert at taking naps, thanks to the morning show schedule, but for some reason, I’m not using those skills as much as I should. For instance, Kate is sleeping right now....I should be, too!
