A Working Mom

Today, I join the majority of mothers in America who are working moms.  Many have asked me, “Are you excited to go back to work?”  My answer is yes and no.  I have loved getting to bond with my daughter Lauren morning, noon and night.  In fact, I can’t believe how much I have loved it!  I am in awe of how much she has changed in the past twelve weeks!  She’s grown so much, smiles so much, coos so much--she’s truly the most amazing little being to me.  Motherhood is, in a word, fabulous.  Going back to work means less time with my darling daughter, and I treasure every minute with her.

Going back to work also means returning to the career I dreamed of as a teenager, worked for as a college student and continued to hone over the past eight years at WITN.  It means returning to the people who I am so proud to serve by bringing you the latest news and information that’s important to your life, along with, hopefully, a little bit of happiness to your morning.  I have always been humbled by the fact that so many allow Jim and me into their homes and morning routines each day, and I am excited to return to this.  It means returning to our incredibly talented and outrageously fun Sunrise Show team.  Awesome co-workers like Jim, Melissa, Mike and Kim make returning to work that much easier.

Lauren waking up in the morning is adorable; I will miss getting to see that big grin when she sees me standing over her in her crib.  Luckily, that’s a gift she will give to her daddy each day. I am so grateful to my husband Chris who will be getting Lauren ready for her day while I’m anchoring the Sunrise Show.  He’ll also be responding to any middle of the night needs after I have left for work. I couldn't’t return to work on this shift without such a caring, committed and loving husband.  I think their mornings together will be a terrific time to bond in a special way.

I’m also grateful for all the support I have received from friends and viewers, excited about me returning to their morning routine. My friend Virginia makes me feel good by reminding me how great it is that Lauren will have the benefit of interacting with children at daycare during the morning and playing with me in the afternoons.  Something my friend Martha texted to me really helped me with the transition back to work. She wrote, “Lauren is lucky to have a mom that values her career and worked hard to get where she is.”  Those words really resonated with me, and I know I will think of them often when I’m missing Lauren.

When I logged on to my computer for the first time, I was surprised to find the background desktop picture was still an ultrasound picture of our baby.  We didn’t know then if we were having a boy or a girl.  Now we have met the beautiful baby girl in that ultrasound picture, and I have happily replaced the picture of one giving me a giant smile.
