Cool Technology For Parents (And Expectant Parents)

From 3D ultrasounds to video monitors, a look at the new technology for parents.

Cool.  Amazing. Weird.  Creepy.  Those are all adjectives I heard in response to the story we ran Monday morning about 3D and 4D ultrasound images of an unborn baby.   The details you can see in the newest form of ultrasound is leaps and bounds ahead of where the 2D ultrasounds are.  Chris and I decided not to have a 3D ultrasound performed since we have decided not to find out the sex of our baby in advance.  For the parents who do get the 3D and 4D ultrasounds, it is incredibly cool.

Each time I visit the doctor for a check up for the baby, they listen to the baby's heartbeat.  Did you know that you can buy a fetal heart rate monitor for your home?  I  am just as happy to let the professionals monitor the heart rate at the doctor's office, but it is interesting that you can purchase this equipment to do yourself.  Remember when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reportedly had an entire ultrasound machine in their home as they expected Baby Suri?

When my friend Abby had her first baby last year, that was the first time I had ever seen a video baby monitor in action.  Instead of the monitors where you just listen for your child, you can now listen and watch them on a tiny screen.  They are a little pricey, but we have already gotten a chance to play our the new video monitor we received at a baby shower.  When my niece Caroline was in town last month, we set the video monitor up to see if we liked it.  I must admit--it was pretty awesome.  Caroline is now 16 months old, so we watched her walk around the crib a little bit and talk to herself, then push her face into her blanket and nosedive back to the mattress to sleep a little longer.  The video monitor proved to be as informative as it was adorable.

What other cool technology have you seen develop for parents?
