When I heard the "fight" between ECU running back Jonathan Williams and defensive back Leonard Paulk at the awards banquet during the Liberty Bowl was over a packet of sugar, my first reaction was to shake my head in embarrassment for the program. My second reaction was to visualize how such a ridiculous scuffle could possibly take place.
Much like an old Bugs Bunny cartoon, here's how I imagine it went down.
Leonard Paulk (playing the role of Elmer Fudd) and Jonathan Williams (in the role of Bugs Bunny) are sitting at the banquet table.
Leonard: Hey Jonathan can I have some sugar?
Jonathan: Sure. You want one lump or two?
Leonard: One should do it.
Jonathan: Okay, you asked for it.
Obviously I'm making light of an embarrassing scene. Whether it was a packet of sugar or the last slice of cheese cake (as some reported) doesn't matter. Players representing their universities have to behave better than that especially at a banquet in front of administrators, coaches, bowl officials, politicians, and of course the media.
Fighting is nothing new especially with football players. They are like brothers in a family. Brothers fight. Brothers make up. It happens. It happened in Hawaii two years ago. Two ECU players fought in a cab after a night on the town. The story didn't make headlines for a lot of reasons. Media not being there was one of them. More importantly, it didn't happen at a banquet where civility was at a premium.
Holtz was right to suspend the players indefinitely. Maybe part of their punishment should be to watch old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Maybe then they'd realize how stupid they looked.
