Hot Button Issue For Home Depot

Some businesses don't want their employees pinning buttons on their shirts at work. But Home Depot finds itself in hot water over the policy because it ended up firing a man wearing a button that just happened to proclaim, "One Nation Under God!"

Some businesses don't want their employees pinning buttons on their shirts at work. But one company finds itself in hot water over the policy because it ended up firing a man wearing a button. The button just happened to proclaim,  "One Nation Under God!"

Trevor Keezer said he had been wearing the button to work at a south Florida Home Depot for over a year. Keezer said he was wearing the button to show his support for his brother, an Army specialist headed to Iraq, and to express his Christian faith.

Keezer says his managers never mentioned the button until last month, about the time he started bringing his Bible to work. Last week, the 19 month award winning employee was fired.

So what does Home Depot have to say about all of this? A company spokesperson says the corporate dress code does not allow non-company issued buttons, regardless of their message. "As you can imagine with 300,000 associates across the country it is important to have a consistent policy to make sure we are respecting everybody's views and beliefs."

Keezers lawyer says Home Depot enforces its dress code arbitrarily, allowing some buttons, but not others. She's pushing ahead with a lawsuit claiming religious discrimination.

So what do you think? Should Keezer be allowed to wear the button? Do you believe it is about the button policy or the religious message? What if the button was promoting a religion contrary to yours...should that be allowed? Is there anything wrong with expressing your faith at work?
