I Don't Want Summer To End!

I'm one of those people who find it hard to let go of summer. I felt it slipping away Tuesday as the kids headed back to school.

Don't get me wrong...I like fall, football and the cooler temperatures. But I have to ease into it. That's because I really love everything about summer...the hot weather, vacations, the pool, trips to the ocean, more time with family, and the overall feeling of a more relaxed and slower pace.

Back to school shopping over the weekend at the Smithfield Outlets was a real dose that the inevitable end to summer was at hand.

The panic really set in when I agreed with my wife to "take a peek" inside Carolina Pottery. It started out innocent enough. I felt myself pulled towards the fake palm trees with lights on them. I said, "These would look nice on the deck. Maybe we'll come back and get them for Christmas." Uggh! The thought of Christmas. I had to get away from the summer palm trees that now made me look past fall and all the way to Christmas. So I turned down another aisle...big mistake. Now I was in the middle of fall decorations as far as I could see. Another turn and it was aisle after aisle of Halloween decorations. In an attempt to escape, I ran right into all of the Christmas trees and Christmas decorations!

I abruptly told my wife I was done in the store and quickly ran out. I was happy to be back out in the hot sun. I was relieved to see a vendor selling lemonade. Suddenly, summer was back in the air!

With high school football games already being played, the kids back in the classroom for a few days now, and the summer gear packed away in stores in favor of winter apparel, there's no doubt fall is knocking on the door. And I guess eventually I'll have to answer, whether I want to or not.

I suppose when I long for summer in the months ahead I'll just head back to Carolina Pottery and park myself under the palm trees...with a lemonade.
