Suddenly...It's Summer

After a chilly winter and spring...this latest heat spell will be around for a while.

It's almost a case of be careful what you ask for. After seemingly endless chilly weather, we have been flung right into the middle of summer. High temperatures were well into the 80s and 90s across the inland areas of eastern Carolina this weekend, with cooler 70s along the beaches. High pressure offshore, is acting as a heat pump, bringing the unseasonably warm air into eastern Carolina. This is called a "subtropical high", and as a result we're seeing temperatures well above normal. It wasn't that long ago that we saw chilly weather. In fact on the 17th we dropped down to a chilly 34 degrees. I think the days of the 30s won't be back for some time. The average high this time of year is in the mid 70s, with lows in the lower 50s. This would be typical for a late April day. This heat will stick around for a while. The high pressure area off the coast won't budge too much over the next several days, as a cold front inches closer to us. The next chance for rain will be late Wednesday into Thursday, as a cold front moves through the region. At this point it doesn't appear it will be that much cooler behind the front. So the rest of April will feel more like June or July. I hope June and July doesn't feel like April. Doubt it.
