Winter Weather Melts Snow Removal Budget
As another storm approaches North Carolina, the state has already spent more than twice what was budgeted for snow removal this season.

Our state is trying to dig out from a budget shortfall, that could get even deeper, since we've had to dig out from recent snowfalls.
The state allocated 20 million dollars for any wintry weather this year, but lately we've spent more than twice that number.
In Pitt County, DOT crews spent more than 212 thousand dollars to put salt and sand on the roads along with hours of overtime for workers.
We spoke to Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton, who says they will have to look at how they will counteract the cost when reserves are running low.
Dalton says it will be up to the legislature whether they'll raise taxes to generate funds for the budget.

Already this winter season the D.O.T. has spent more than $45-million on statewide snow removal efforts, while just $20-million has been budgeted.
The biggest cost comes from Watauga County in the western mountains where crews have spent $2.2-million. Here in Eastern Carolina the snow removal efforts have been a little bit more reasonable. Nash County leads with $331,000, followed by Halifax with $330,000 and Wayne with $307,000.
Some other counties with high snow removal costs include Wilson at $248,000, Edgecombe at $216,000, and Pitt County at $212,000. On the low end, Carteret County has spent just $7,693 on snow removal so far this season.

Where is all the budget money from previous years? This is the first bad weather we've had since Flood Floyd. Maybe a ice storm in the western part of north carolina one year. The state should have plenty of money for disasters.
Thanks news for telling us more about the State running out of money. Now how bout' more reporting about families who are homeless or penniless, devoid of fuel to heat their home (like me... 0 % propane and no money to even get min order). No jobs. No health care (now I have a raging bacterial lung infection and can't afford the health care to recover and now no heat too). No hope for a job. Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc. We also don't want to hear about poor movie or sport stars who screw up their lives either!!! Enough. Get real news to the masses about the true situations with real people.
Global, be carefull of using "warming of the planet". I agree with El Nino, however, anyone, including spokes Gore...take any credibility of an actualallity. We don't have global warming, we have cyclic weather, like we have for too many years. My question; did the state place the money for cold years in a trust fund? You know, warm winters don't use the salt....where is the savings from past years? Also, don't worry, Bev has the fat tax in the back of her mind. She is monkey see, monkey do from the land of fruits and nuts, California. Sodas, fast food, unhealthy foods, well, when they went after smoking....the box was open to "control human behavior". Isn't that progressive socialism? I thought parents guided their children...well, now nany state will help you...
